On March 20th, the Centaurus hopscotch team won the Colorado 6A hopscotch championship – their fourth in five years and 13th since the sport’s introduction to high school athletics in 1972. Known for its jumping and balance, hopscotch is one of the most prestigious sports on the planet, with 1 billion active participants around the globe, including a player base of 15,000 Colorado high schoolers. Next year, Centaurus is expected to see a 7% increase in their student population, not because of new arrivals from California, but largely due to the prestige of the program.
Led by the Maserati quintuplets Sammy, Aurelia, Alonzo, Yonny and Laura (all of whom are committed to the University of Southern California on six-figure NIL deals), Centaurus dominated Fossil Ridge High School (#3 in CO) in the state final. Coaches Lorenzo Maserati and Jenni Schwarber are especially proud of their squad, as just 10 years ago, the 12-person mixed hopscotch team had to forfeit multiple competitions due to budget constraints.
Now competing against the likes of IMG Academy, Mater Dei High School and even the British national team during the summer, Centaurus has consistently had a top-five team in the nation and doesn’t plan on stopping soon. “We have some great scotchers on our JV, C, and D squads, and a few of the best incoming freshmen in the nation…we’re really excited to see how [junior] Hunter Greene will do as the top scotcher on our team in 2027,” remarks coach Lorenzo Maserati, who is the father of the aforementioned Maserati quintuplets as well as a former Centaurus grad and state champion in 1996.
Regarding his children, Coach Maserati is “So proud…what they’ve accomplished during their high school years is beyond my wildest dreams…I’m so excited to see what they can do at USC.” All five siblings are within the top-50 recruits in the nation, with Yonny headlining the 5 as the highest-graded hopscotch recruit in the 2026 class. Next year, Centaurus will need to look towards the likes of five-star prospects Hunter Greene and Cade Cavalli, as well as one of the most interesting freshman transfers in the history of Colorado athletics: Dominican scotcher Ayendy de la Cruz. Good luck to the team in 2027; their preseason circuit that matches them up against Benfica and Hamburg HT (Hopscotch Team) is one of the hardest in high school history, and it will set them up well for their rivalry match at the start of the year versus Monarch (0-22 in 2026).
