Students this semester may have noticed a new face in the English Department: Maya Benko, the newest addition to the faculty, has already begun making an impression with an engaging teaching style and clear passion for literature and writing.
Born in Colorado, Ms. Benko recently joined our school after teaching at Peak to Peak. With a background in both writing and teaching poetry, she says her journey into teaching was inspired by her previous English teachers who showed so much passion and love for the subject.
When asked about her first impressions of the school, Ms Benko said, “It kind of feels like a college campus, in a good way. It’s like a mixture of all the places I’ve taught before.” She mentioned how “lovely and accepting Centaurus felt” and how she was “welcomed with open arms by the staff and students.”
Students in her PIB 10 LA classes can expect a mix of classic and contemporary literature, interactive discussion, and writing assignments designed to encourage creativity and critical thinking. During our conversation, Ms. Benko emphasized the importance of building confidence in reading and writing skills.
“Creative, interactive, and personalized” was her response when asked what three words she would use to describe her teaching style, and students completely agree! Her English class thus far has been a mix of interactive discussions and creative games to help students understand and digest the material.
Beyond the classroom, Ms Benko enjoys writing poetry and is coaching jumps in track. She is especially excited to get more involved in the school community as well as meeting and making connections with students.
Ms. Benko is also a great person to get book recommendations from! When asked what book changed the way she sees the world, she said, There There by Tommy Orange. This book is fiction with historical elements that tells the story of the Big Oakland powwow from the perspective of 12 characters. “It’s brutal, heartbreaking, but incredible”, says Ms. Benko.
As the year finishes out, many students are looking forward to getting to know their new teacher better. With enthusiasm, experience, and a commitment to student success, Ms. Benko is ready to make a lasting impact beyond the classroom.
Be sure to say hello to Ms. Benko if you see her in the hallway – and get ready for a semester full of thoughtful discussion and great books in her English classes.
