Book in hand, Campus Security Monitor Christopher Najera is often seen walking Centaurus halls, speaking with students, and watching the building.
Centaurus welcomes Chris, whose open yet professional attitude created an instantly accepted addition to the security staff.
I sat down with Chris on September 29th to ask him about his time so far at CHS. Several students greeted him on the way to our talk. We began by discussing his history in Colorado. Chris is himself a graduate of Centaurus High School. He attended school with fellow Centaurus alum Mr. Mason and graduated in the class of 2002. He began his career in schools at Skyline High School in 2019. This is his 6th year in school security.
In his free time, Chris reads, cooks and spends time with his family: “When I’m not relaxing, trying to read a book, I’m taking care of my family. I have 3 kids.” When I asked Chris his favorite memory from Centaurus so far he responded, “Getting to bring my son to his first high school soccer game”.
He loves cooking for his family. He says, “I love to cook, it doesn’t matter what it is… Whether it’s alfredo sauce or pesto, to smoking briskets or ribs, [to] making green chili”, Chris says he will make anything.
Although not picky about his reading, Chris says, “Working in security, I read a lot of books about social [psychology], … how people interact with each other”. Chris’s favorite books include Ready Player One, The Count of Monte Cristo and Gates of Fire. Beyond his love of reading, books help him connect with students and his work.
Chris remarks about his work, “I love my job…I look forward to coming to work every single day”. His sports jerseys and sage advice continue to make their mark as the year progresses.
