Centaurus Sound: 5 Miniature Valentines Playlists

Love is all around us, and whether you’re a Valentines’ hater or lover, we all should have music to go along with our Valentines’ vibes. To celebrate the season of love, here’s five miniature playlists related to love and relationships for (at least) five different kinds of people.

Playlist #1: Happily in Love

This is a playlist for everyone who is in a happy relationship this Valentines’ Day or is trying very hard to manifest one.

  • Track #1: Cupid’s Chokehold / Breakfast in America by Gym Class Heroes. Simply a song about being totally in love with a new person.
  • Track #2: Cloud 9 by Beach Bunny. This song is about how someone loving you can lift you up and make you feel happy even when other things suck.
  • Track #3: Backyard Boy by Claire Rosinkranz. This song is about the nerves and excitement of new love.
  • Track #4: Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. An absolute classic of a love song. If listening to this doesn’t make you smile, then I don’t know what can make you smile.
  • Track #5: Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley. Another classic love song, a bit slower than the previous track, but definitely one that embodies the power and joy of love.

Playlist #2: Sad Love

If you just broke up, you’re in love with someone who doesn’t love you back, you miss your ex, you’re single and hating it, or you just like to cry to music for fun, this playlist is for you.

  • Track #1: Glimpse of Us by Joji. This is a song about being in a relationship with someone, but missing the person you were with before. It’s a really sad one, but an amazing song, so I’d definitely recommend it.
  • Track #2: Never There by Cake. A super funky song from a super funky band. This song is about being in a loveless relationship, and it also has one of the best trumpet melodies I’ve ever heard.
  • Track #3: GONE, GONE / THANK YOU by Tyler the Creator. This track explores the stages of grief that come from having someone leave you.
  • Track #4: Hypotheticals by Fran Vasilić. This song is about really wanting to be loved and the pressure to change yourself in order to be loved by someone else.
  • Track #5: Bon Iver by mxmtoon. Explores how hard it is to move on after someone leaves your life and how some things you used to enjoy become painful without that person.

Playlist #3: Mad Love

Love so intense you feel like you’re going crazy. Toxic relationships? Never heard of them.

  • Track #1: Mrs. Infamous by Palaye Royale. They said it best, it’s a song about “a guy who loves a girl so much he’s gonna put her in the ground”.
  • Track #2: Line Without a Hook by Ricky Montgomery. Loving someone so much you would completely break yourself to continue being with them.
  • Track #3: Crush by Johnny Manchild and the Poor Bastards. Pretty similar to the track listed above in terms of topic, but a completely different sound, so if you like the premise of track #2 but don’t like the song, maybe you’ll like this one.
  • Track #4: Washing Machine Heart by Mitski. I think you’re probably getting the idea of what these songs are about at this point, but this one just feels sadder than the other ones.
  • Track #5: Heroin by Badflower. This song is about how it feels to be addicted to someone, and how it destroys you emotionally.

Playlist #4: And They Were Roommates Lovers

A celebration of LGBTQ artists and queer love, because sometimes this holiday can feel overwhelmingly heteronormative.

  • Track #1: White Ferrari by Frank Ocean. This song is Frank Ocean mulling over a past relationship and thinking of good times from the past.
  • Track #2: Lemon Boy by Cavetown. Not technically a song about love, but it could be interpreted that way, and really what is a LGBTQ playlist without Cavetown?
  • Track #3: THATS WHAT I WANT by Lil Nas X. This song might be a bit overplayed, but it is undeniably a great song about queer love.
  • Track #4: girls by girl in red. A song about loving girls. There’s really not much else to say about this one except that if you haven’t heard it you definitely should give it a listen.
  • Track #5: Sofia by Clairo. This song centers on the themes of feeling criminalized because of your sexuality and one-sided love.

Playlist #5: Metal Lovers

Want to listen to Valentines’ tunes,  but you only listen to songs about Satanism and murder? Me too. It was incredibly difficult to find these songs; some of them are not exactly love songs, but they definitely all say love in them at some point.

  • Track #1: Take Your Pick by Ice Nine Kills (ft. Corpsegrinder). A heavy metal song based off of the 1981 slasher film My Bloody Valentine. As one of Ice Nine Kills’ heaviest songs which also features the vocalist from Cannibal Corpse, this one packs a punch.
  • Track #2: Pain Remains I: Dancing Like Flames by Lorna Shore. If you’ve heard a Lorna Shore song before, you know what a fan of long intros this band is but I swear if you keep listening it’s more than just the sound of rain falling and strange keyboard. This song is super cool and it has a very sad story about moving on from someone you loved.
  • Track #3: A Little Piece of Heaven by Avenged Sevenfold. An absolutely crazy story about a man murdering his lover and her ghost coming back to kill him which ends with their wedding in hell. Like any Avenged Sevenfold song on Afterlife, it’s very long and also has an orchestra in it.
  • Track #4: Giftig by Rammstein. This song is about a toxic relationship, and how it literally feels poisonous to be around the other person in that relationship. It’s also a brand new Rammstein song on their latest album Zeit
  • Track #5: Wildfire by Periphery. I have only a vague grasp on what this song is about, but it seems like it’s about love driving someone to the brink of insanity. It’s in a very cool key and it has a saxophone solo, so you should listen to it even though it might have nothing to do with love.
