There are things looming in the academic world for most Centaurus students in late March, especially before Spring Break. Students are dealing with the loads of work put on them before the break, as well as college decisions for the Seniors and the looming SAT for the Juniors. The timing could not be better, then, for an all-day college basketball tournament on Thursday and Friday of that week.
Once the tournament begins, students’ priorities shift (as they rightly should) towards following the madness that starts at 10 AM and goes into the late hours of the night. As this is an immutable occurrence, teachers should shift their curriculum to be more inclusive to those with plans to watch the games all day, regardless of whether or not the students should.
However, it is important that teachers don’t exclude non-basketball watchers. Monday and Tuesday should be devoted to teaching students how the tournament works, and studying the conference tournaments that gave teams the chance to play. Wednesday should be devoted to crafting several brackets, one for each class, which will be submitted to teachers for possible extra credit. Then, Thursday and Friday will be a mandatory watch day, with projectors set up in the Fishbowl like during the World Cup. There could be lessons in physics, statistics, chemistry, and leadership on display in every classroom: The trajectory of the ball, the odds on every shot, team chemistry, and how the coaches lead their teams provide opportunities for all of the skills mentioned above.
Honestly, the school would be doing its students a complete disservice to not give them the opportunities to learn in such a fun environment. Plus, it gives the students a chance to build a better relationship with their classmates and with school itself. It is so much fun to watch the games with each other. The energy is infectious and I truly believe that it could be such a fun thing to follow with everyone. Plus, there is some healthy competition for brackets and such.
All members of the staff should heed this message. At the end of the day, is there any better idea for the contents of spirit week? The only correct answer is madness week.
