After their most recent game versus Silver Creek High School, Centaurus varsity baseball sits at 9-11-1 on the season, and 4-6-1 in their league. Zach Young had a rare off day, and the Warriors lost to Silver Creek 3-9. Even after 6 earned runs in 4.2 innings of work, Young has the highest number of innings among the top 50 ERA leaders in Colorado. He is clearly the ace of the pitching staff, but he is not alone. Carter Nelson, Tavian Gomez, and Zach Holshey are all very capable pitchers in a high school rotation, and as of May 2nd, Centaurus has a team ERA of 4.23. All of these pitchers that were mentioned, though, are currently seniors.

The Centaurus Baseball program currently has a large class of graduating seniors, just like last year. The thing is, almost their entire lineup consists of seniors, and only 1 junior, Ben Sehnert, commands a consistent starting role. Therefore, most of the players on the varsity roster have been on the same team and in the same classes for multiple years up to this point. In the Warriors’ case, extended relationships have been a big reason for their push to their first playoff appearance since 2019. According to Senior DH Parker Hilt, “it really helps out the team chemistry” to have so many Seniors that have played together. This includes fall and summer leagues with each other where the team chemistry really grew.

As of the writing of this article, the Warriors sit within the CHSAA 4A playoff baseball picture, but their two remaining games, away at Monarch on Saturday 5/10, and at home against Fairview on Thursday 5/8 on senior night are both must wins to guarantee a spot in the playoffs. Zack Young will be on the mound at Monarch, while Zach Holshey will close out the year against Fairview. For a team that has not made the playoffs since 2019, “we’ve been talking about it since day one”, says Hilt. The Warriors are in a good position to succeed in their initial goal with two Senior pitchers on the mound to close out the regular season against BVSD rivals.
